The National Eligibility Test (NET), commonly known as UGC NET or NTA-UGC-NET, is a prestigious national-level exam in India. Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) on behalf of the University Grants Commission (UGC), this exam certifies the eligibility of candidates for the roles of ‘Assistant Professor’ and for the award of ‘Junior Research Fellowship’ (JRF) in Indian universities and colleges.
UGC NET, an essential qualification for academic positions and research opportunities, was initially conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) until July 2018. Since December 2018, the responsibility has been taken over by the NTA, ensuring a seamless and standardized testing process.
The UGC NET is held twice a year, in June and December, via an online mode. However, during the lockdown period, the exam was conducted once a year in November. The test comprises two papers held on the same day: Paper I and Paper II. Both papers are objective type, with Paper I consisting of 50 multiple-choice questions and Paper II containing 100 multiple-choice questions, each question carrying 2 marks.
UGC NET is instrumental in determining the eligibility of Indian nationals for various academic pursuits:
Category | JRF | Assistant Professor | Ph.D. Admission |
---|---|---|---|
Category-1 | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Category-2 | No | Yes | Yes |
Category-3 | No | No | Yes |
For JRF-qualified candidates, admission to Ph.D. programs is based on an interview as per UGC’s regulations. UGC NET qualification under categories 2 and 3 can substitute for university-specific entrance tests for Ph.D. admissions. Marks obtained in the NET have a 70% weightage, with the remaining 30% based on interview performance, determining the combined merit for Ph.D. admissions. The NET marks are valid for one year from the result declaration date for Ph.D. admissions. Results are declared in percentiles along with the marks obtained, aiding in Ph.D. admissions. The number of candidates qualified for ‘Ph.D. admission only’ is decided by the results committee. At Aarambh Yoga Institute, we prepare candidates for UGC NET, empowering them to achieve their academic and research goals with comprehensive guidance and support.
